Turkey's PM reiterates call for diplomacy over Iran

29 March 2010 [16:35] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for diplomatic means to resolve a dispute between the West and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program.
"What we need here is nothing but diplomacy. Everything else would threaten global peace and yields nothing," Erdogan told German weekly Der Spiegel's current edition ahead of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's trip to Turkey on Monday.

Responding to a question over the International Atomic Energy Agency's doubts that Iran would use nuclear power for civilian purposes only and whether Turkey would support possible sanctions on Tehran, Erdogan said the IAEA had no such doubts.

"Sanctions imposed on Iran in the past have failed to yield any results. U.S. and German merchandise reach Iran albeit indirectly. There are Mercedes or Peugeot cars in Iran," Erdogan said.

"We do not want nuclear weapons in our region. And this is what I have told the Iranian president, too."
