Georgian CEC chairman claimed ready to resign

13 March 2010 [12:07] - TODAY.AZ
Zurab Kharatishvili, head of the Central Electoral Commission of Georgia, is ready to resign in case opposition presents evidence of intentional overstating of number of electors in electoral lists, the CEC chairman said at a press conference with Georgi Vashadze, chairman of Civil Registry Agency of the Ministry of Justice.

"I address the parties, who make irresponsible statements on data of 1 million non-existing people, allegedly included in electoral lists... If anyone presents a list, including at least 1,000 non-existing electors, I am ready to resign tomorrow," Kharatishvili said.

Previously Kakha Kukava, Conservative party leader, claimed the electoral list contains by one million more people than exist in reality.

On the threshold of the upcoming elections of May 30th, CEC and Civil Registry Agency published the lists of electors, stating that 3,587,425 electors live in the country.

Opposition believes the lists are intentionally overstated.

CEC and Civil Registry Agency, in their turn, question the work of political subjects on lists' monitoring and demand inspection of targeted use of budget finance, allocated for the check.
