AI companies’ environmental impact called enormous

The world’s largest AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX, have grown from ambitious startups into some of the most influential business ventures in just a few years. However, despite the rapid expansion of their operations, they have so far said relatively little about the impact their activities are having on the environment and climate change, AzerNEWS reports.

Unlike major technology companies such as Google and Microsoft, many leading AI firms do not publicly disclose detailed data on their greenhouse gas emissions, make clear commitments to achieving carbon neutrality, or regularly publish comprehensive sustainability reports.

Until recently, investors had reportedly expressed growing concern about the issue. However, amid a broader backlash against corporate climate policies, many investors and businesses have become less willing to raise environmental concerns. At the same time, regulators in the United States have eased some of the pressure on companies to address climate-related risks.

The scale of the AI industry also raises questions about whether these companies can still be described as “startups.” Their enormous investments in computing infrastructure, data centers and energy supply now place them among the most powerful players in the global technology sector.

Accurately measuring the environmental impact of the AI boom remains difficult. However, researchers warn that the rapid construction of data centers is already putting significant pressure on electricity grids and increasing demand for new power plants. According to researchers cited in the report, the gas-fired power plants being developed in the United States to supply data centers could eventually produce emissions on a scale comparable to those of an entire country such as Australia.

The problem goes beyond electricity consumption. AI data centers also require huge amounts of water for cooling, while the production of advanced chips and servers consumes additional energy and raw materials. As AI models become larger and more widely used, their environmental footprint could grow even further.

Earlier, Reuters journalists also uncovered a potentially significant financial issue involving the technology industry: approximately $1 trillion in previously unaccounted data-center lease obligations on the balance sheets of major U.S. technology companies. The figure is nearly four times higher than the $285 billion in lease obligations officially reflected in their financial statements.

The rapid expansion of AI is therefore creating a new dilemma: the technology promises enormous economic and scientific benefits, but its growing appetite for electricity, water and infrastructure could make its environmental cost impossible to ignore.
