Hungary’s ruling Tisza Party nominates former supreme Court Chief for President

08 August 2026 [21:25] - TODAY.AZ

Hungary’s ruling Tisza Party has nominated former Supreme Court President András Baka as its candidate for the country’s presidency.

AzerNEWS reports that the party’s parliamentary group announced the nomination, according to Reuters.

Baka is expected to be elected president on August 11.

The term of President Tamás Sulyok ended on July 20. Under Hungary’s Constitution, parliament must elect a new head of state within 30 days of the expiration of the incumbent president’s mandate.

If the parliamentary vote is held on August 11 as scheduled, the newly elected president could take office on August 19.
