Chile and Venezuela reopen consular channels

Chile has officially restored consular relations with Venezuela, bringing an end to a two-year suspension that stemmed from diplomatic tensions between the two countries, AzerNEWS reports, citing foreign media.

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna said the decision is intended to ensure that citizens of both nations have access to essential consular services and legal assistance.

"The restoration of consular relations will guarantee protection and services for citizens of both countries," Pérez Mackenna said, adding that the move marks "the beginning of a new stage based on constructive dialogue."

According to a statement from Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision is part of a broader effort to gradually normalize bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation on issues of mutual interest, including migration, trade, and regional stability.

Chile first announced a roadmap to restore consular ties on July 30, signaling its intention to rebuild diplomatic channels with Caracas after relations were suspended in 2024 amid political disagreements.

Although the reopening of consular relations does not necessarily mean a full restoration of diplomatic ties, it is considered an important step toward improving communication between the two governments. The move will also make it easier for thousands of Chilean and Venezuelan citizens to access passport services, visas, legal documentation, and emergency assistance.

The decision reflects a broader trend across Latin America, where several countries have sought to re-establish practical diplomatic cooperation despite continuing political differences, with the aim of addressing regional challenges through dialogue rather than isolation.
