Iranians top consumers of soft drinks

26 November 2013 [16:24] - TODAY.AZ
Consumption of soft drinks in Iran is at the highest level in the world, IRNA reported on November 26.

The world's average per capita consumption of soft drinks is 10 litres, but the figure is 42 litres in Iran, Ezzatollah Golalizadeh, vice chairman of the society of general practitioners has said.

It is while 90 per cent of Iranian families are suffering from calcium deficit. Soft drinks prevent the absorption of calcium by bones in the body.

Each glass of soft drink contains 35-55 milligrams of caffeine which leads to insomnia and restlessness.

Soft drinks are among the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay. Acids and acidic sugar by-products in soft drinks soften tooth enamel.

The high levels of phosphoric acid in soft drinks have been linked to kidney stones and other renal problems.
