Obama calms Merkel down

US President Barack Obama reassured German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday that US intelligence was not monitoring her mobile telephone communications, dpa reported.

The leaders telephoned amid reports that Merkel's phone had been targeted by the US National Security Agency.

Obama assured Merkel that "the US is not monitoring and will not monitor communications of the chancellor," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
