Thumbs up comes from Obama,Cameron to Russia's Syria proposal

14 May 2013 [09:00] - TODAY.AZ

US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday welcomed Russia's willingness to cooperate on a peace conference for Syria, warning that there would be no easy solution for the conflict, dpa reported.

"We welcome President (Vladimir) Putin's agreement to join an effort to achieve a political solution," Cameron said after talks at the White House. "The challenges remain formidable, but we have an urgent window of opportunity before the worst fears are realized. There is no more urgent international task than this."

Obama noted that "the entire world community has an interest in seeing a Syria that is not engaged in sectarian war, in which the Syrian people are not being slaughtered, that is an island of peace as opposed to, potentially, an outpost for extremists."

However, he acknowledged any efforts at peace would be difficult, because once "the furies have been unleashed in a situation like we're seeing in Syria, it's very hard to put things back together."
