Saakashvili turns down to make speech at national library

09 February 2013 [10:27] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has postponed his speech at the National Library due to acts of violence there, spokesperson for the Georgian president Manana Manjgaladze said today.

The president will make a statement from the administration at 20.00 pm.

She said that it is impossible to hold a scheduled event in this situation.

Interior Minister Irakli Garibashvili appeared at the rally in front of the National Library building, where Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was to deliver the speech. He tried to calm the crowd and call for order.

Half an hour earlier, members of the parliamentary minority and Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulava were attacked by the crowd. Some of them were injured.

This happened after a crowd of former political prisoners and their supporters gathered in front of the building did not allow MPs to enter the building of the National Library.
