Armenian presidential candidate appeals to cancel his candidacy

Armenian presidential candidate and leader of the "National Accord" party Aram Harutyunyan, who was on hunger strike in front of the Central Election Committee building on the same day, delivered a statement on the withdrawal of his candidature to the CEC, the Armenian CEC said, Panorama.am reported.

Tonight, the Central Election Commission will hold a meeting on the issue.

Earlier, Harutyunyan urged all other presidential candidates to issue statements on a joint withdrawal to render main rival - chairman of the Armenian Republican Party Serzh Sargsyan as the sole candidate.

The sixth Armenian presidential election will be held on Feb.18 from 08:00 to 20:00 local time. The head of state is elected for a term of five years.

Those running for the presidency are the incumbent president and ruling Republican Party leader Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan, chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan, Paruyr Hayrikyan, Arman Melikyan, Andrias Ghukasyan, Vardan Setrakyan and the leader of the National Accord Party Aram Harutyunyan.
