Ceasefire announced in Gaza

A ceasefire agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas after eight days of fighting, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said on Wednesday, DPA reported.
The truce is to commmence at 1900 GMT.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and said she looked forward to a comprehensive deal for the region.

"There is no substitute for a just and lasting peace," she told a press conference in Cairo alongside her Egyptian counterpart, Mohamed Kamel Amr.

"The US and Egypt will work together to support the next step," she said, adding that the United States would work with countries in the region to "provide security for Israel and improve conditions for people in Gaza."
