Russia opposes new sanctions against Iran

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has once again expressed his country’s opposition to any fresh sanctions on Iran, calling on the US administration to rein in further ‘counterproductive’ economic restrictions by the US senate.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Sri Lankan counterpart Gamini Lakshman Peiris in Moscow on Wednesday, the Russian minister said the proposed US Senate sanctions "are aimed not at combating possible risks of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction but in essence at the economic strangulation of Iran."
