Turkmen foreign ministry: Absheron peninsula, Chilov island should not be taken into account in delimitation of Caspian Sea

04 August 2009 [12:53] - TODAY.AZ
The "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper has today published an article on behalf of Turkmenistan Foreign Ministry.

In the article Turkmenistan Foreign Ministry says that any unilateral actions in the Caspian Sea are inadmissible.

“For this the littoral states should sign an agreement determining their jurisdiction in the concrete areas of the seabed. Convention on the Continental Shelf adopted in Geneva in 1958 also requires it.”

The Foreign Ministry believes that the Caspian seabed and surface should be delimitated based on median line principle.

“Ashgabat believes that Absheron peninsula and Chilov island should not be taken into consideration while delimitating the Caspian Sea between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.”

Turkmenistan Foreign Ministry states that they will be committed to the principle of appealing to the international arbitration under the certain circumstances.

The divergence between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan is linked with three oil and gas fields - Kapaz (Serdar), Azeri (Omar) and Chirag (Osman).
