U.S. ambassador speaks Azerbaijani to American students in University of Languages

U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse met with the American students learning the Azerbaijani language in Azerbaijan University of Languages, APA reports.
According to the ambassador, US and Azerbaijan signed Memorandum on cooperation on education last year, this document served the expansion of the cooperation in the field of education.
“Like many other languages, the Azeri language has been included into the language security program and is being studied by the Americans,” she said.
The diplomat spoke Azerbaijani to the students.

Rector of the university Samad Seyidov said the American students’ learning Azerbaijanis was a new step in the education system of Azerbaijan, it was the result of the new stage of the relations between the two countries. Seyidov expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Department of State and Obama administration for including Azerbaijani into the list of strategic languages.

Following this, the students shared their impressions. A young man speaking Azerbaijani fluently said he worked for “Peace corps” in Mingachevir in 2003.
“There are good meals in the United States, but there are no Azerbaijani meals. I miss pilaf and baklava,” he said.

8 graduates of U.S. universities have been learning Azerbaijani in the University of Languages since June 2.
