Fikret Sadikhov: Azerbaijan's ability to meet Russia's interests in gas supplies might play a positive role in the Karabakh conflict resolution

The Karabakh conflict is among most important issues to be discussed by the two leaders as this is a key issue for Azerbaijan and Moscow understands well that most in the Karabakh conflict solution depends on efforts and will of the Russian leadership, said political scientist Fikret Sadikhov, commenting on possible discussion of the Karabakh conflict during the expected visit of the President of Russia.

"Here, it is important to understand that Russia is interested in Azerbaijan. Being Armenia's ally and supplying weapons to it and allocating loans, Russia understands well that it is neighboring tolerant Azerbaijan, where a greater part of the population is loyal and treats Russia well.

Moreover, strengthening of Azerbaijan's position in the region, its geopolitical component are of great importance for Moscow. Russia can not be an eternal "feeding source" for Armenia and Moscow is aware of it.

Today, a draft agreement on the Karabakh conflict settlement is on the agenda and it is related to the return of the Armenian-occupied Azerbaijani lands.

As for the possible direct connection between the Azerbaijani gas supplies to Russia with the Karabakh conflict settlement, he said "definite exchanges existed between the countries in the history of international relations".

"This does not imply direct exchange of Azerbaijani gas for Karabakh. Though Russia is interested in our gas. Today Azerbaijan is becoming not only a source of valuable hydrocarbons", said he.

"Azerbaijan's ability to meet Russia's interests in gas supplies might play a positive role in the Karabakh conflict resolution", concluded he.
