Prime Minister of France expresses readiness to facilitate the settlement of Karabakh conflict

As part of the East Partnership summit in Prague, President Serzh Sargsyan met on 7 May with the French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, EU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Foreign Relations of European Partnership Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and the head of the Foreign Ministry of Great Britain David Milibend.

At a meeting with Prime Minister of France the sides stressed successful development of friendly relations with France in both economic and humanitarian spheres.

The President of Armenia noted that economic cooperation between the two countries will gain a new quality with the entrance of the French telecommunications company "Orange" to the Armenian market.

At the request of the French Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan presented the process of Armenian-Turkish negotiations and the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

According to Sargsyan, Armenia is ready to resolve the conflict, which will ensure lasting peace.

Francois Fillon, in turn, expressed readiness to promote settlement of the Karabakh conflict. He welcomed the political dialogue between Turkey and Armenia and efforts of both countries to establish relations.

The sides discussed the impact of the global financial crisis on the economies of both countries, attempts to resist it and the trends in the global economy.

During the meeting with the British Foreign Minister, the two sides stressed the importance of further development of both bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Armenia and the United Kingdom and the implementation of new initiatives.

Serzh Sargsyan and David Milibend exchanged views on issues related to security, peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. David Milibend noted that the UK contributes to the peaceful settlement of all existing problems and to consolidation of peace in the region.

While communicating with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Commissioner for Political Affairs of the European Neighborhood Benita Ferrero-Waldner in the framework of the East cooperation summit, the latter welcomed recent efforts to resolve the Armenian-Turkish relations and expressed willingness to contribute to this process.
