Opinion of sociopolitical figures of Azerbaijan about possible opening of Turkish-Armenian borders

19 March 2009 [11:00] - TODAY.AZ
A number of local and Turkish mass medias have recently published articles about the soonest possible opening of state border between Armenia and Turkey.
In this connection, Day.Az has asked for opinion of local deputies and political scientists who spoke of this variant of developments:

MM deputy of ruling party, political scientist Aydin Mirzazade:

- First of all, the very publications on this topic, should be treated as newspaper articles. It means that these might be someone's thoughts and the attempt to set up the desired for the reality. Or this may be an hoax to influence definite circles of Turkey to take the following steps. As for the very issue of opening of borders, the most difficult thing in politics is to predict. And I do not think I can predict well but if borders really open, I think the Turkish public will react duly in this case.

The people of Turkey was always closely tied to Azerbaijan, these two people always built their plant for future together. This means that first of all the Turkish government will have to respond to their public. And this will prove the sincerity of Turkish polititians while saying that Armenian-Turkish relations will not resume unless Armenia liberates the occupied lands of Azerbaijan. Certainly, friendly support is desirable, but if someone does not find this power in himself, no one forces it to be bear Azerbaijan.

Political scientist Rasim Musabeyov:

- No one in Azerbaijan wants to believe it. I think it will not occur in April, I rule it out. But I think the intensive Armenian-Turkish dialogue is a good proof of that it is possible. And I do not think the dialogue can just lack a subject. Certainly, Armenians wish opening of borders, establishment of diplomatic relations and not absolute support of Azerbaijani position in the Karabakh conflict by Turkey. Armenians want to get it as well. For them it is important as they consider that it will deprive Azerbaijan of the last international support. But I think this is not like that.

Director of the center for political innovations and technologies Mubariz Ahmedoghlu:

- I think the working powers of Turkey are mistaken. They have long been resisting the activity of Armenian organizations in the United States, France and other Western countries, but despite this they allowed the Turkish Armenians to organize like their US compatriots. And this occurred too quickly. I think this could not have happened if there was not the will of the currently governing party of Turkey. For this purpose, we should be ready for the opening of borders vetween Turkey and Armenia.

Political scientist Zardusht Alizade:

- I think that opening of borders is quite possible and there is nothing unusual about it. The diplomats and state figures of Armenia and Turkey are holding official talks. The task has been declared from the any beginning. The aim is to normalize bilateral relations, settle disputable issues and I think the parties are quite close to opening borders, establishing diplomatic relations and even resumption of railway communication.

Head of Azerbaijani delegation in PACE MP Samed Seidov:

- Azerbaijan and Turkey maintain close relations and earlier Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan spoke about it clearly. I am deeply convinced that no matter what happens and no matter which change occur in the external or internal policy of Turkey, our countries are brothers, the states that are close to each others not only politically, but also culturally and ethnically. We often attach a special importance to any tactical insignificant steps, but we do not pay attention to the overall strategic movement of any state.

As for definite steps, actions or even newspaper articles, I would recommend not to exaggerate this and not to take these statements so seriously, as it is not known exactly who these statements are intended for. Leaving this all aside, it should be said that no one can affect the relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey, that have very stable historical roots and very firm real socioeconomic and political aspects under any circumstance.
