Political situation in Georgia depends on Saakashvili’s actions: ex-president

17 March 2009 [11:05] - TODAY.AZ
The political situation in Georgia depends on President Mikheil Saakashvili's actions rather than on the opposition, Georgia's former President Eduard Shevardnadze said.
"Now it is difficult to tell whether the opposition will be able to make incumbent President Mikheil Saakashvili resign. Everything depends on his actions," Shevardnadze told Trend News.

Georgia's opposition has been preparing in recent months to launch protest actions from Apr. 9. They plan to hold a large rally in Tbilisi, demanding President Saakashvili's resignation.

Yesterday, several thousand people gathered in the center of the capital city near the monument to Shota Rustaveli in a rally demanding incumbent President Mikheil Saakashvili to resign.

According to Shevardnadze, the rallies may be fruitless. "There have been a lot of such demonstrations in Tbilisi, but Saakashvili remained in office," he said.

Shevardnadze did not rule out that the same situation may repeat now. "On the other hand, the current opposition is more likely to be a success than it was before," Shevardnadze said.

Over the past few years, Georgia's opposition parties and movements have held numerous rallies and protests, demanding President Saakashvili to resign.
