Elshad Iskenderov: "The fair assessment to the tragedy in Khojaly by the world community must be given at any variant of the Karabakh conflict resolution"

The campaign "Justice to Khojaly is Liberation of Karabakh" was initiated by general coordinator of the OIC youth foundation on intercultural dialogue Leyla Aliyeva on the day of occupation of Shusha by Armenians on May 8 of the last year and will start on February 26 of this year, said Elshad Iskenderov, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Conference Elshad Iskenderov.

According to him, the idea to start this campaign appeared due to the absence of a complex and methodical work to inform world community and world humanitarian centers about the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

"This campaign aims to inform the international community about the tragedy in Khajaly and the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh. Second on the background of understanding of the international community to attain the political and legal recognition of the tragedy in Khojaly on the international level. The Karabakh tragedy and Khojaly are a peak of the wider historical process of deportation, large scale violent actions against Azerbaijanis by Armenians from the early 1920s until late 1980s, that should be qualified as genocide. Therefore, recognition of the Khojaly tragedy as a massacre against Azerbaijanis by Armenians can be an impulse for recognition of the genocide of Azerbaijanis in the 20th century. We expect the recognition of the tragedy in Khojaly by the world community as a massacre against Azerbaijanis by Armenians at the second stage of our campaign. Third, the recognition of the tragedy in Khojaly by the world community as a massacre against Azerbaijanis by Armenians must lead to condemning those responsible for this crime", said Iskenderov.

According to him, the fair assessment of the tragedy in Khojaly by the world community must be given at any variant of the Karabakh conflict resolution.

"This process is also urgent on the background of our efforts on the peaceful resolution of the conflict as no reconciliation between peoples is possible if the crimes, committed during the conflict between them, are not recognized", noted the secretary general.
