Arif Yunus: "Azerbaijan should have taken a neutral position in the situation in Gaza"

16 January 2009 [10:15] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan has worsened its state by its statements on the situation in Gaza and voting for the resolution of the UN Council on human rights condemning Israel's actions, said chief of department of Institute of Peace and Democracy Arif Yunus.
It should be reminded that the topic of discussion was "Azerbaijan's position on the situation in Gaza".

"I understand that we are an integral part of the Islamic world and the relations with Muslim countries are important for us. But on the other hand, we should not forget that we are strategic partners with Israel. It is no secret for anyone that three countries: Turkey, Israel and Azerbaijan are strategic partners.

We know that this country supports us both in the military sphere and in economy and diplomacy. We need both Israel and Islam.

I think that it would have been more correct to take a neutral position and it would have been correct in the sense of the national interests of Azerbaijan", said Yunus.
