Armenian parliamentarian: "Oil attracts CE more than democracy"

14 January 2009 [18:19] - TODAY.AZ
"If the co-rapporteurs of the PACE monitoring commission are informed about the real situation in Armenia, I think we will have something to tell them", said head of the faction of the Republican Party of Armenia, deputy chairman of the party Galust Saakyan.

He said the CE approaches towards Armenia is an application of double standards.

He said the Council of Europe never commented on the events in Georgia, which was due to the said approach of superpowers.

"For example, CE keeps silence about the intention of the Azerbaijani leadeadership to eliminate the restriction, preventing Ilham Aliyev from balloting for the post of the president many times, by way of referendum. It seems that oil attracts CE more than democracy", noted Saakyan.

Regarding the letter of the speaker of the National Assembly Ovik Abramyan, sent to the chairmen of the parliaments of the PACE member-states in which the speaker of the Armenian national assembly asks them to support the Armenian delegation during the winter PACE session, Galust Saakyan said the following: "This is a civic method, which was used".

He voiced confidence that Armenia will not be deprived of the right to vote in PACE.

"I have a good opinion about PACE. If any sanctions are applied against Armenia, it means the Council of Europe needs to be renovated", noted the parliamentarian.
