14 January 2009 [16:16] - TODAY.AZ
Human Rights Watch has released its annual report on human rights.
According to Azadlyg radio, the report says about Azerbaijan that presidential elections in 2008 enabled Azerbaijan to show progress in the sphere of human rights, yet the country did not justify these hopes.

"Opposition parties boycotted the elections and freedom of assembly and press was restricted", says the report.

Moreover, the report fixes that though 5 journalists were released in late 2007, in 2008 other 5 journalists remained in prison and they were arrested for their professional activity.

"The facts of torture and maltreatment in police stations, violence against human rights activists remain a serious problem", says the report.
