A session of the initiative group on the restoration of the proportional system, initiated by the Liberal-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, was held on Tuesday, reports Day.Az with reference to the press service of the initiative group of the party.
The head of the steering committee of the initiative group Vahid Nazarov announced that currently a preliminary agreement was received for conduction of a campaign to restore the proportional system and hold a referendum with the Adalyat party, Civil Solidarity, Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, Liberal Party, Social-Democratic Party, Musavat party, Civil Development Party and National-Socialistic Party of Azerbaijan.
"Currently talks are also held with other political structures. We are planning to execute this idea till the end, even in case some parties refuse to join us", noted Nazarov.
It should be reminded that the Party offers to eliminate the majority system and restore the proportional system of elections. The party considers that this idea must be implemented before parliamentary elections of 2010.
It should be noted that currently, the elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system. Azerbaijan had had a mixed electoral system before 2002. Constitutional reforms were ratified at a referendum held in 2002 and the proportional electoral system was fully eliminated.
