Ilgar Mamedov: "Boycott of these elections by opposition is explained by its weakness and helplessness"

11 October 2008 [13:39] - TODAY.AZ
The participation in the voting will be the lowest through the whole period of Azerbaijan's independence, considers independent political scientist Ilgar Mamedov.
"There are no elections in Azerbaijan, as the population is passive. In this connection, the participation in voting on October 15 will be at a historical minimum through the whole period of Azerbaijan's independence", he told reporters Saturday.

The number of voters in Azerbaijan makes over 4,800,000 this year.

According to the political scientist, the boycott of elections by opposition is explained by two factors: its weakness and helplessness, though the rules of presidential campaign have been tougher before.

"Another reason of the weakness of opposition is a pressure by the powers, restriction of the activity of the opposition parties, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly", noted Mamedov.

As for the possible revival of opposition and its intensification before parliamentary elections of 2010, the political scientist said he is not sure that the opposition will be able to gain success in the nearest future.
