Andres Herkel meets with Azerbaijani presidential candidates - UPDATED

A delegation, led by Andres Herkel, head of the election assessment mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, held a meeting with Iqbal Aghazade, chairman of the Umid party, nominating for presidency.

Umid party chairman Iqbal Aghazade told Day.Az that during the meeting the sides discussed the pre-election situation in period of collecting signatures for registration in the Central Election Commission and the situation in the region, especially the Karabakh problem, and so on.

Andres Herkel also met with former chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan Qulamhuseyn Alibeyli.

In the framework of the visit Andres Herkel held a meeting with opposition leaders, boycotting the presidential elections.

Head of the public forum "For Azerbaijan" Eldar Namazov told Day.Az that the meeting was attended by Musavat party leader Isa Qambar, head of the National Unity movement Lala Shovket, chairman of the Popular Front Party Ali Kerimli and head of the Civil Development Party Ali Aliyev.

"The visit of the delegation was connected with the election situation. It is the most informed structure, monitoring the election situation, which is aware of the situation in the country. Our meeting was of consultative nature and the main topic of discussions was the non-participation of opposition leaders in the upcoming elections", noted he.

Day.Az reports that Herkel has already met with Great Creation party chairman Fazil Qazanfaroghlu.

He noted that the head of the assessment mission displayed interest with the stage of signature collection and the overall preparations for elections.

"I think that this meeting is of great importance before the presidential elections", announced he.

Fuad Aliyev, chairman of the Liberal-Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, running for presidency, met today with a delegation, led by Andres Herkel, head of the election assessment mission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, reports Day.Az with reference to the press service for the party.

As is reported, the party chairman informed the representatives of the PACE assessment mission about the process of the signature campaign.

Fuad Aliyev also informed about the election platform and answered several questions of Andres Herkel.
