Head of OSCE mission to observe elections: "Our task is to assess compliance of elections in Azerbaijan with international standards"

We, being a mission to observe presidential elections of Azerbaijan, have arrived by invitation of country's Foreign Ministry and we have held a meeting in the Foreign Ministry and the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan, said Boris Frlec, head of the OSCE ODIHR mission and Slovenian diplomat.

He noted that 12 mission members are currently in Baku.

"28 more observation mission members will arrive in the country by the end of the week. They will be divided into two groups and sent to the regions", said the Slovenian diplomat. At the same time, Frlec noted that the main task of the mission is an assessment of compliance of elections in Azerbaijan with international standards and conduction of elections on the basis of national legislation.

"We do not interfere with the voting process and we will not comment on the processes, which bear no relationship to the elections", said Frlec.

He announced that 450 short term OSCE observers will arrive in the country on the voting day.

The head of the observation mission announced that before the elections, they will make two small reports regarding the election situation -on the third week of September and early October. According to him, on the next day of voting the mission will make a final report on elections.
