Eldar Namazov to appeal against amendments to Electoral Code of Azerbaijan to the Constitutional Court

"Most of the recent amendments to the Electoral Code contradict to democratic principles, aim at violating the rights of opposition candidates and voters.

These amendments are not only antidemocratic but also directly contradict to the constitution of the country", said head of the forum "For the sake of Azerbaijan" Eldar Namazov, who nominated his candidacy for the presidential elections.

He said one of the violations was the prohibition of agitation campaign on the state TV channel, transmitted throughout the country, offering debates on the public television, which will cover a smaller territory of the country, instead.

"Don't Shain Aliyev, Safa Mirzoyev and other experienced professional lawyers understand that deprivation of millions of voters of the right to observe the television speeches and debates of the candidates is a direct violation of their constitutional rights?

This same can be said about other amendments, introduced to the Electoral Code. Undoubtedly, as soon as President Ilham Aliyev signs this law, I will appeal to the Constitutional Court of the country for it to assess these amendments of our constitution", noted he.   

Namazov also added that the recent steps of the authorities show that they are really anxious about possible results of the forthcoming elections.

"Some opposition representatives, speaking for boycott, substantiate their decision saying that the authorities are interested in participation of the opposition in the election as a decoration, that opposition is not able to do anything and it would be better to reject participation in this spectacle.

Undoubtedly, the powers would want the elections to be only a play with the result known фруфв. But the recent steps of the powers show that even by adopting these amendments to the Electoral Code, the powers fear that the script may not be accepted, that the growing social tenseness in the country and resentment of the population may change the script.

If Azerbaijanis, who earn law salary, start to buy food and clothes in Europe, as our prices are higher than those in Europe, and the state officials live in luxury at the expense of national resources-such socioeconomic policy can arise nothing except for protests, which can step to an open phase anytime.

Therefore, the authorities undertake steps to limit participation of opposition in the elections, restrict possibility of voters to listen to the speeches of opposition candidates", concluded he.
