Panarmenian congressmen inform US Secretary of State about threat of new war in Nagorno Karabakh

16 February 2008 [14:54] - TODAY.AZ
52 US congressmen sent a letter to US Secretary of State, informing of the continuing threats by Azerbaijan to resume war in Karabakh.

Armenian National Committee of America reports that the idea was proposed by Joe Nollenberg and Frank Pallone, co-chairmen of Group for Support of Armenia of the US Congress.

The congressmen note that official Baku undermines efforts of the US administration in boosting peace and stability in the South Caucasus region. "Azerbaijan has threatening to Armenia with war for many years. However, the recent announcements made by senior officials prove that the rhethoric has turned into a real and dangerous threat", the letter to the US Secretary of State reads.

It should be noted that a letter of the Group proposing to mark the 20th anniversary of the "National Movement" of Nagorno Karabakh was spread in the Congress on February 15. "As Americans, we appreciate the courage of the population of Nagorno Karabakh in maintaining democracy and establishment of national movement, which covered all former USSR states and the countries of the Warsaw Treaty.

We consider that this movement not only brought freedom to the people of Nagorno Karabakh but also contributed to peace. Despite aggression, blockade and other challenges, the people of Nagorno Karabakh was building democracy, promoting market economy and interacting with the world community for boosting peace and cooperation in the region" the letter reads.
