Azerbaijan rejects Armenian proposal on regional cooperation

30 May 2007 [22:13] - TODAY.AZ
Head of the Armenian delegation to the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe, Emin Yeritsyan addressed the Strasbourg session of Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and proposed to establish regional cooperation network.

Head of Azerbaijan Delegation Anar Ibrahimov exclusively told that Azerbaijan rejected the proposal, APA reports.

"Azerbaijan does not join any project on cooperation with Armenia. About 920 Azerbaijan settlements have been occupied by Armenia. Any form of transboundary and regional cooperation is possible only after remove of the results of Armenian occupation."

Mamuka Abuladze, vice-president of Georgia's Association of Local Authorities exclusively told it would be good if the regional cooperation is realized but he said Azerbaijan’s position on the issue is understandable. He said Armenian-Georgian cooperation in this sphere is impossible.

"Council of Europe would not accept it as the South Caucasus is a small region and it is accepted as one region."

Touching upon Armenian proposal Yavuz Mildon, President of the Chamber of Regions of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities told it is Azerbaijan's own affair to accept or reject Armenian proposal. However, he stressed the Congress says yes to any cooperation.
