US does not ask for deploying radar in Azerbaijan - foreign minister

22 March 2007 [23:26] - TODAY.AZ
The US has not asked for deploying in Azerbaijan's territory a mobile radar as a component of the American missile defense system, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told on Wednesday.

He is on a working visit in Washington.

"Such proposals have not come," he said.

Mammadyarov explained that "according to our legislation, foreign bases or facilities are not permitted in our territory".

"For example, the radar station used by Russia is Azerbaijan's property that we lease to Russia. At that, all equipment of this radar station is also property of Azerbaijan. Even if somebody will want to install in our territory a mobile radar, it will also become property of Azerbaijan," Mammadyarov said.

US Missile Defense Agency Director Henry Obering told a news conference in Brussels on March 1 that the US would like to have a radar in the Caucasus, without specifying a country.

He said that such radar would be of use for the missile defense system, but would not have an important role, Kazinform cites Itar-Tass.
