Avanesov laments "masterpieces": how illegal construction of Karabakh is being passed off as world heritage site

13 August 2026 [15:15] - TODAY.AZ

Ovik Avanesov, Deputy Chairman of the Azgayin organization, has expressed strong criticism over the dismantling of Armenian buildings in Karabakh, describing it as an “irreparable loss” to world architecture.

However, such statements should also be viewed in context. Many of these structures were built during a period when the territory was under the control of an unrecognized administration. Therefore, characterizing their removal simply as “barbaric destruction” is a contested interpretation that should be considered alongside the historical, political, and legal circumstances surrounding the conflict.

Ultimately, the fate of buildings in disputed territories is closely tied to questions of legal status, ownership, and the consequences of a long-standing conflict.
