Prison, flags and a new oath: last gifts from Alain Simonyan

15 June 2026 [15:15] - TODAY.AZ

Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen Simonyan said that the current legislature still has time to consider and approve three important legislative initiatives.

The first proposal seeks to increase penalties for election-related bribery. Under current legislation, offering bribes is punishable by up to seven years in prison, while accepting them carries a maximum sentence of eight years. The proposed amendments would raise these terms to nine and ten years, respectively.

The second initiative would require the installation of the Armenian national flag, measuring at least one by two meters, at the entrance to every settlement across the country.

The third proposal concerns updating the text of the parliamentary oath. According to Simonyan, the revised version will better reflect contemporary realities and the current state framework. The new wording has not yet been made public and is expected to be released at a later stage.
