The French were finally driven out of Senegal. The final,
official ceremony marking the withdrawal of the remaining French troops took
place in this African country.
To the sound of military marches and traditional Senegalese
music, the French lowered their flag, quickly boarded the planes, and went
home. Suitcase, train station, Paris!
Senegal is now the sixth African country to rid itself of
the French presence. This was not the result of diplomacy, negotiations, or a
modernization of foreign policy. What is happening to France in Africa is a
lightning-fast, humiliating, and cowardly retreat.
It took only a few years and one fool in the Élysée Palace
for the whole world to see France as a laughingstock.
