Britain's rarest flower is to be protected by extra police patrols and thousands of pounds worth of CCTV cameras to prevent it from being stolen when it flowers this month.
The Lady’s Slipper orchid is at the centre of a major security operation as cuttings can change hands for up to £5,000 among collectors.

The huge operation includes increased patrols at the site at the Silverdale Golf Course in Carnfoth, Lancashire, and the 100-year-old orchid being tagged with a coded security mark. Extra security cameras may also be installed to monitor the plant 24 hours a day.

‘The Lady’s Slipper orchid is an incredibly important plant, having survived for over 100 years when all other plants were thought extinct,’ said PC Tony Marsh, beat manager for the area.
