Adriatic pipeline to tap into Azerbaijani gas

16 September 2010 [10:43] - TODAY.AZ
The Shahdeniz II natural gas field in Azerbaijan is the initial target of gas intended for the project, designed to offer the shortest and most-cost-effective gas supply European markets, The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) Managing Director Kjetil Tungland, announced at World Gas Infrastructure Caspian 2010 gas conference in Baku on September 15.

"However due to the political situation in the region, the Iranian gas will not be transported via TAP," according to Kjetil Tungland.

In a joint statement, TAP shareholders said their planned pipeline was designed to cater for the volumes of gas from Shah Deniz that will be exported beyond Turkey to Europe. TAP shareholders consider Caspian gas to be the initial source of supplies to fill the pipeline.

TAP is considered to be the shortest route in the Southern Gas Corridor, linking Europe to new sources of gas in the Caspian and Middle East regions. The initial capacity of the pipeline will be about 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas per year, with the option to expand the capacity up to 20 bcm. The total length of the pipeline is 550 kilometers.
