Despite Azerbaijan has traditionally been oil and gas producing country, the country pays great attention to developing alternative and renewable sources of energy, Azerbaijan's Deputy Industry and Energy Minister Natig Abbasov said at an international conference on development of alternative and renewable energy sources in Baku today.

The deputy minister described Azerbaijan as a country of winds.

"According to our estimations, we can boost generating capacity by extra 800 MW through wind generators only," Abbasov added.

The deputy minister said solar panels, which are alternative source of energy, have already been installed in the new building of the Central Election Commission.

"Besides, Azerbaijan is also considering possibility of using biomass energy," he noted.

In his turn, Deputy Chief of the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy said Jamil Malikov said Azerbaijan has become a member of the International Agency for Renewable Energy (IRENA).

“We attach great importance to development of renewable energy in the country and we are trying to attract investment and advanced technologies for the development of this sector,” Malikov underscored.
