Azerbaijani deputy FM: Economic Cooperation Organization needs to be reformed

04 February 2010 [16:00] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan will take over General Secretariat of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) from 2012, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev said.
According to him, therefore Azerbaijan has serious attitude towards ECO.

“The region, where the Economic Cooperation Organization is represented, has very important advantages. First of all, geographical location of these countries, the shortest and effective transport corridor, rich natural resources are of great importance. But we consider that the efficiency of this organization is still low,” he said.

According to Deputy Minister, the efficiency of the organization requires important projects.

“Azerbaijani government supports serious reforms in the organization and always states it openly. The organization has been functioning for 20 years. Of course, some work has been done within 20 years. But efficiency of the organization should be increased. People should see that indeed there is such an organization and some work is done as a result of its activity,” he said.
