Azerbaijan provides financial assistance to Tajikistan to eliminate consequences of natural disasters

15 July 2009 [17:27] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani government provided 1$00,000 in financial assistance to Tajikistan to support the victims of natural disasters this spring, the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan said.
“Assistance was provided based on the official request by the Tajik government given the urgent situation in Tajikistan. Nearly $100,000 has been provided,” the government said in a statement.

Usually such issues are discussed and decisions are made at meetings of the Council of CIS Heads of Governments. But this would require much time.

Ample precipitation in Tajikistan in April-May 2009 triggered off flooding and landslides, rockfalls and raised water level in rivers. The natural diasters covered more than 40 areas of the country.

According to the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Tajikistan, the disaster affected about 2,500 houses 20 percent of which can not be restored. The total damage caused to national economy is estimated at more than $100 million according to the Tajik government, CA News reported.
