Syria to buy 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas per year

Noting that Azerbaijan and Syria have signed 18 documents on Syria-Azerbaijan ties, Bashar al-Assad said he debated gas issue as well during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“There are gas pipelines linking Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia and Turkey. Two years ago we launched talks on gas supply and laying gas pipeline from Turkey to Syria. Azerbaijani gas can be supplied to Syria via this pipeline and onwards to Jordan and Egypt.”

“We are much interested in buying gas as we have small volume of reserves. Undoubtedly, Azerbaijan will supply great part of the gas that will run via this route,” al-Assad said.

He said the gas pipelines will contribute to ties among Caspian, Black Sea and Persian Gulf regions.

“We negotiated to buy gas from Azerbaijan. The gas will be delivered to Turkey via Syria. Azerbaijan agreed to export nearly 1 billion cubic meters of gas to Syria at current prices per year. Turkey welcomes this move,” he said.

This pipeline will create a new atmosphere in relations among Azerbaijan, Turkey and Syria, the Syrian president said.
