Ali Abbasov accuses the ITU of failing to perform its function

08 November 2006 [14:51] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's Communications and Information Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov addressed the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which will take place from Monday, November 6 to Friday, November 24 in Antalya, Turkey.

The Ministry told APA that Mr. Abbasov drew the attention to recent ICT reforms in Azerbaijan, saying this sphere is one of the priorities of Azerbaijan.

The Minister also expressed his dissatisfaction with the activities of the ITU, saying Armenia interferes in Azerbaijan's airspace through the Azerbaijani territories occupied by Armenia, and the ITU has taken no notable measure to eliminate the problem.

Azerbaijan has appealed to the ITU many times but in vain.

Ali Abbasov will also meet with heads of leading ICT, business and governmental organizations during the conference attended by 196 countries.

The Plenipotentiary Conference is the top policy-making body of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Held every four years, the Conference sets the Union's general policies, adopts four-year strategic and financial plans and elects the senior management team of the organization, the members of Council and the members of the radio regulations board. In other words, it is the key event at which ITU Member States decide on the future role of the organization, thereby determining the organization's ability to influence and affect the development of Information and communication technologies (ICT) worldwide.
