Heavy snow fall paralyzes daily life in parts of Turkey

09 March 2011 [18:52] - TODAY.AZ
Snow storm and blizzard brought daily life almost to a standstill in parts of Turkey, causing inter-city motorways and roads at the countryside to shut down.

Two days of uninterrupted snowfall in capital Ankara plunged the city's traffic into chaos on Tuesday evening as major routes got cluttered with stuck vehicles, forcing car drivers and passengers of public transport to walk to their homes. Large crowds rushed to the city's subway and light rail system.

Road crews with the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality was continuing to fight snow round the clock to keep roads open. The office of the governor announced a day of recess for schools in the Turkish capital.

Snowfall is expected to continue through Wednesday but it would be lighter on Thursday, meteorology authority said.

Heavy snowfall also closed roads to hundreds of villages across the country.
