25 July 2014 [16:20] - Today.Az

“FC Red Bull Salzburg’s opponents in the third qualifying round of the Champions League are FC Garabagh. The team from Azerbaijan won their second leg 4-0 against Valletta from Malta and are in the next round with a 5-0 aggregate win,” Austrian FC Red Bull Salzburg has said on its website.

“Adi Hütter, the Red Bulls’ coach, was at the game and says: "Qarabag have a very good team with some particularly exceptional foreign players. Additionally we expect some very fanatical and highly passionate fans. We need to go into the two legs with full concentration.”

The website says: ““FC Garabagh Agdam have an eventful history. The club is originally from Agdam, as the name suggests, in the Karabakh region bordering Armenia. During the Nagorno-Karabakh war the city was occupied and completely destroyed by Armenian separatists in 1993. The club fled to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. These days Agdam is a ghost town.”

“The new home of FC Garabagg Agdam, Baku, is one of the most advanced and modern cities on the Caspian See with over two million residents.

The reigning Azerbaijani champions have been able to reach the 3rd round of Champions League qualifying several times. In 2010/2011 Qarabagh made the play-off round and were knocked out by Borussia Dortmund with defeats in both legs. In 2013/14 the club made the Europa League qualifying play-offs, where they faced Eintracht Frankfurt and lost both legs there too.”

“A striking side detail is the similarity of the club badges. Just as we have our Red Bulls on our crest, the opponents have two blue horses.

The match dates are Wednesday 30 July and Wednesday 6 August. The kick-off time of the second leg in Salzburg will be confirmed this week,” the website says.
