Cristiano Ronaldo maintained his lead at the top of the Spanish goalscoring charts to seal the 'Pichichi' award, in the process jointly winning the European Golden Shoe alongside Liverpool sharpshooter Luis Suárez.

Ronaldo's 31 league goals put him three ahead of Leo Messi and four ahead of Diego Costa, both of whom failed to score yesterday. The next closest challengers, a long way off, were Alexis Sánchez and Karim Benzema on 19 and 17 goals respectively.

This is the Real Madrid star's second 'Pichichi' and third Golden Shoe. He claimed both gongs in the 2010-11 season, and also won the European accolade in 2007-08, during his time at Manchester United.

The Portuguese ace was expected to have a shot at overtaking Suárez yesterday, but was unable to play against Espanyol. Having been named in the starting line-up, he felt a twinge of pain during the warm-up and sat out the game as a precautionary measure. It was later revealed that he had pulled a muscle, but will be fit for the Champions League final in Lisbon.
