Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger wants a shake-up of the Champions League after calling on Uefa to abolish the away-goals ruling.

Wenger saw his side exit last season`s competition against Bayern Munich on the rule, having drawn 3-3 on aggregate, and will face the Germans again in the knockout stages next year.
However, Wenger`s complaint over away goals settling an outcome of a European tie has now pushed him to air his grievances to the very top.

During a recent managers meeting in Geneva, the Frenchman revealed he had called for a change that, he believes, would transform the negative approach from clubs competing in the top-tier competition.

“The weight of the away goal is too heavy, too big and is not justifiable any more,” Wenger said. “People are surprised by my question. But I think it a problem in the modern game. Why did they put the away goal in? As there was nothing on television. When you went out of the European Cup you got kicked everywhere. Nobody said a word so to encourage the teams to play they said OK, we give you an incentive for the away game. In the modern game everything is on television and analysed.

“There is no big difference anymore. Sometimes I think there is a counter-effect as teams play at home not to concede goals. At home the first thing managers say is let`s not concede a goal.”
