The preliminary investigation revealed that Shahlar Valiyev, Eldar
Asgarov, Sayad Asgarov and Nushaba Gasimova, who posed as journalists,
threatened businessmen to disseminate discrediting news about cafes
Gubba, Ramin, Gosha Chinarm Afsana and Rustam owned by the businessmen.
They demanded businessmen to pay 1,000 manat each, the Interior
Ministry press service said.
Shahlar Valiyev and Eldar Asgarov pleaded guilty.
The investigation revealed that editor-in-chief of Yeni Azerbaijan Dunyasi newspaper, Shahlar Valiyev, of Sumgayit city, and editor-in-chief of Gunashli Azerbaijan and Qanun ve Gercheklik newspapers, of Shirvan city, were engaged in blackmail against local businessmen.
A suit has been filed over article 182.2.1 (blackmail by organized group) of the Penal Code. An investigation is underway.
The Central Department for Combating Organized Crime asks citizens
who were blackmailed by Valiyev and Asgarov, to appeal to the
department.
