The 2nd Conference of the National Library Directors of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member countries was started in Baku on Monday within the “Baku – Islamic Culture Capital 2009”, APA reports.

The directors of the national libraries of Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, as well as representatives of the ECO Institute of Culture are attending the conference organized by the Akhundov National Library of Azerbaijan. The international book fair “Islamic Culture in the books” was opened at the National Library before the conference. 40-50 books from the national library funds of every country were exhibited in the fair. Most of these books will be presented to the National Library of Azerbaijan after the conference. Addressing the opening ceremony, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Abulfas Garayev said the next “Baku – Islamic Culture Capital 2009” event was related to the books. It shows how are important the books, as a carrier of knowledge, in the Islamic world.

On April 21, the participants of the conference will discuss the establishing of the united portal of the National Library Directors Council, celebration of the anniversary of Turkic outstanding peoples’ anniversaries in the Islamic world and other issues.
