One of the most dangerous landslide areas in Azerbaijan is the vicinity of the Bozdag volcano in the village of Khokmeli on the Absheron Peninsula.

The head of the Group to Study Exogenous Geological Processes and Geological Planning Expedition under the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, Aziz Garalov named place in the village of Zykh, a neighborhood of the "lake of leeches" in the village of Masazir one of the dangerous landslide areas of Absheron, where the activity of earth layers is constantly noted.

He added that there are a lot of landslide zones in the Shamakhi region.

With regard to the possible activation of landslides after torrential rains that passed last week in the territory of Azerbaijan, Garalov noted that at present there are no new landslide areas. But activity is in old and ancient zones of displacement.

Meanwhile, torrential rains affected the southern region of Azerbaijan, where even flooding occurred. In the middle of last week, on October 5, rescuers of the Ministry of Emergency Situations were sent to the Astara, Lankaran and Masalli regions, who evacuated several dozen people.

There are also many active zones in south Azerbaijan. As an example, Garalov set the road section of Jalilabad-Yardimli, the 27th kilometer of the Lankaran-Lerik route.

As for the Bayil slope in Baku, where a danger of the descent of terrestrial rocks exists, the geologist noted that lighthouses were installed there, and now they testify to the lack of activity.

Experts claim that the number of areas that are prone to landslides in Azerbaijan has increased by four times in the past 24 years.

Scientists believe that people are behind 80 percent of the landslides by their agricultural activity which increases the risk of landslides.

Construction work on the slopes of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, the use of a watering yard, the outpouring of groundwater on the surface, and other factors are the cause of these landslides, which have been a problem in the past as well.
