The Day of Azerbaijan has been held on the sidelines of Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
Participants in the event included President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, president of the European Olympic Committees Patrick Hickey, heads of Olympic committees of the nations participating in the Sochi Olympic Games, and other officials.
Opening the event, Azerbaijani Youth and Sport Minister Azad Rahimov said sport and Olympic movement have been developing rapidly in the country. The Minister said Azerbaijan had successfully hosted many international sport events. Rahimov highlighted preparations for the inaugural European Games to be held in Baku in 2015.
President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach said Azerbaijan had already gained popularity as a sport nation, adding the country is making tremendous contribution to the Olympic movement.
President of the European Olympic Committees Patrick Hickey praised preparations for the first European Games. He hailed sport infrastructure in Azerbaijan. Hickey said they were happy at the attention Azerbaijan pays to developing sport in the country.
