Iran on Monday strongly protested to Italy over detention of two Iranians and called for their immediate freedom from prison.

In a telephone conversation with Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki conveyed Iranian strong protest at detention of two Iranian nationals and called for their immediate freedom from prison.

Frattini promised to do his best to help free the two Iranians by granting fair justice.

"They enjoy counsel rights and their family members and Iranian Embassy officials have access to them," Frattini said.

“We favor friendly ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran and continued consultations with the country on regional issues.”

Mottaki said that the detention has troubled bilateral ties.
