03 February 2010 [13:08] - Today.Az

Armenia's ruling regime has from the very beginning been in a vulnerable situation in the international arena, which resulted in unprecedented pressure in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, reads a statement issued by the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).

In this situation the “Sargsyan-headed regime launched a settlement program as part of its so called ‘initiative’ foreign policy,” the ANC states.

“The essence of this ‘initiative’ policy is a treacherous deal in Zurich, the regime’s consent to Turkey’s demand for the formation of a subcommittee of historians in exchange for reopening of border,” the statement reads.

“The program is based on erroneous calculations and is a criminal one in terms of domestic policy, as it is aimed at misinforming the public and suppressing democracy,” reads the statement.

“As we warned, Turkey will consistently be linking the reopening of the Armenian-Turkish border to the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. It is obvious to everybody,” reads the statement.

The ANC also states that, as a result of growing pressure, Armenia has for the first time agreed to restrict Nagorno-Karabakh’s rights to self-determination.

The Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process has actually turned into an Armenian-Turkish conflict, with recriminations and insults, reads the statement.
